Laingholm
Cliff Rescue Unit
Due to an incident
in 1976 attended by Titirangi Volunteer Fire Brigade and
it's sub station Laingholm, a small number of the Laingholm
Station members decided to increase their skills on Rescue's
by Line. As skills increased to a high level the L.C.R.U.
was formed and officially recognised by the N.Z.F.S. stationed
at the Laingholm sub station in 1978.
In November 1995
the N.Z.F.S. Area Chief of Auckland decided there was no
need for a Cliff Rescue team to be attached to the Fire Service.
A majority of Laingholm station personal agreed with this.
As a consequence of that decision the L.C.R.U. moved its
base from L.V.F.B. and joined with the Auckland Search and
Rescue who felt the loss of this unit would be a loss for
the Auckland region.
The L.C.R.U. now
undertakes the supply of all Line Rescue work and also Search
and Rescue work required throughout the greater Auckland
area.
Some of the team
members are also trained in Rescue techniques for mountainous
regions above the snowline.
The affiliation
to the Land S.A.R. has given L.C.R.U. a vast array of skilled
people to call upon which has helped us in our endeavour
to further the success of the unit.

My area covers approximately
55 square kilometres, ranging from city urban living through to
rural bush living. The population is approximately 15,000 people.
The physical boundaries of the area are Portage Road, Green Bay
to Whatipu. This includes the suburbs of Green Bay, Titirangi, Laingholm,
Parau, Huia, Whatipu and all the little bays and beaches in between.
I try to patrol the
beaches and bush when required, i.e. summer beach attendance or
bush festivals, where the public tend to congregate. I
am also willing to offer advice to any person or group on general
security, personal security and even the forming of neighbourhood
watch groups.
The Neighbourhood
Watch/Support network can be anything you make of it, from
meetings with an elected committee through to a general chit
chat over a barbecue. Others have had street parties. The
choice is yours.
The aim of the
networks is communication, looking out for your neighbour.
We, the community, need your help - more now than ever -
to be the eyes and ears of the community.
As our motto says,
"Safer Communities Together", with your help, we can put
the fear back on to the criminals.
If you have doubts
about something, obtain what details you can and pass them
on to us. Let us decide its worth. We cannot make that decision
if we do not have the information. You never know, it may
be the missing piece in the puzzle.
Neighbourhood
Watch
Neighbourhood
watch groups within the West Auckland district have had some
great successes in locating and identifying offender, and
we would like this to continue and get stronger.
If you wish to rejuvenate
your group, or wish to start one, you can contact the West Auckland
Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Trish Maxwell on 834-4331. She
will assist you any way she can. Alternately,
you can visit the Community Constable's Office at the Titirangi
Fire Station, just down South Titirangi Road from the R.S.A.
